Fraternal Order of Moai Award

Field of Study:

Nursing; Universidad de Santo Tomas

My name is Vaitea Génesis Bravo Pakomio. I am 21years old and I have just completed my third year of Nursing at the Universidad Santo Tomas.

During my school year I particularly enjoyed the scientific area (biology and chemistry), as well as physical education; what they had in common was the functioning of the human body, from the practical in sports performance, and in the more abstract in its internal functioning and how it allows life. This led me in the third year of high school to choose the Humanistic- Scientific education. Furthermore, living in Rapa Nui and not having sufficient financial means makes you aware of the limitations of the environment, such as the precariousness of the hospital, since, after the Ancestral Sports Competition “Koro Nui Tupuna”, I had to pass a medical test, in which in 2020 they told me I had a heart condition, but that it was not limiting for the competition, in 2021 they told me that I had to undergo surgery, which occurred 6 months later, accessing an adult hospital, without the accompaniment of a third party and already in a university period, which also meant insufficient grades for not showing up for tests, making the process quite distressing.

All this maintained the interest in the health area and in my career, which I see as an area of personal development, but which has an important impact on the community in general. I like to think that well-being should be for everyone and from my job I could return to be an agent of change in the hospital system, promoting its efficiency to the extent of my possibilities, especially because despite the years that have passed, the Hospital remains the same. Specifically, I would like to participate in health promotion and prevention for the community of the Island, because it is where I grew up, many of its inhabitants are family, friends, people with whom you share daily and the distance makes you feel even more isolated in periods of illness or discomfort.
