With only elementary and secondary schools on the island, Rapanui students must relocate to colleges
and universities thousands of miles away for post-secondary education. Started about 20 years ago by
EIF Director Marla Wold, the EIF scholarship program provides financial assistance to deserving Rapanui
students. Thanks to the generosity of many donors, over 100 students have received scholarships from
EIF to pursue or earn degrees in archaeology, education, construction, engineering, environmental
studies, maritime studies, nursing, dentistry and other professional tracks, and most have returned to
Rapa Nui to work for the benefit of their community.
