My life has been marked by the cultural and environmental richness, being the daughter of a Rapa Nui and a mainlander.
Travelling constantly between Santiago and Rapa Nui allowed me to learn about environmental issues and compare how local governments deal with them.
At the age of 9, in Rapa Nui I saw the emergence of initiatives such as ecoladrillos and the eco-hare, which promoted environmental awareness, something that contrasted with the complete absence of these on the mainland. This contrast awakened my interest in studying environmental sciences in order to provide concrete solutions that would benefit my people as well as other territories.
I am passionate about my field because it allows me to address the challenges between communities and the environment.
Growing up on an island and being part of the Rapa Nui ethnic group, instilled in me a deep respect for nature. In a limited space, I understood that sustainable resource management is vital.
Studying environmental sciences has giving me the tools to understand phenomena such as climate change and the conservation of ecosystems.
From this perspective, my objective is to contribute to the care of the planet not only through research, but also through practical and educational initiatives that allow communities to live in harmony with their environment.
This commitment reflects my values and my vocation to care for our environment.
I plan to address the lack of territorial planning in rapa Nui, one of the reasons being that the last regulatory plan dates back to 1971. Population growth and the presence of foreigners make it urgent to regulate our limited space, much of which is National Park.
In addition, I want to contribute to the management of water resources, which are essential and limited on the island. My goal is to apply science-based policies to ensure the sustainability of the territory and to protect our natural and cultural environment.
In short, my goal is to apply what I have learned in my education to promote sustainable territorial and environmental management that directly benefits my people and ensures harmonious development with our traditions and resources.
