Field of Study:
Sustainable Development; Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile
While my objectives and general plan of study have remained the same, I have decided to broaden my understanding of sustainable development and territorial planning within Latin America through a semester of exchange study in the University of Costa Rica, based in Liberia (Guanacaste). I hope to gain more experience and understanding of forms of conservation and environmental protection within Costa Rica, to compliment my studies in Chile and provide a different perspective on these areas. I believe these learnings will be particularly useful for my future work within Rapa Nui, due to the strong environmental, economic, and social similarities between Costa Rica and my island.
Composition:
Pensando en Sistemas (System Thinking)
This course allowed me to understand the distinct socio-environmental and socio-cultural problems from different scales, understanding them from an interconnected and sistemic perspective. This knowledge will help me to approach and confront Rapa Nui ́s future environmental and social challenges through a comprehensive lens, taking into account the social, cultural, environmental and economic aspects of our island when providing durable and integrated solutions to these challenges.
Riesgos y Deasastres naturales (Risks and Natural Disasters)
This course focused on different approaches to managing and responding to risks and natural disastors, and how to prepare communities and societies appropriately through planning and risk reduction methods. This will help significantly in the near future for improving the planning of the territory and community of Rapa Nui to be prepared for the ongoing impacts opf climate change on our island, and the ensuing risks and impacts that will accompany this.
