Field of Study:

Doctor of Medicine with specialization in neurosurgery, Universidad de Chile

"In 2025, I completed courses in neurosemiology and neuroscience, both of which were fundamental to my medical and scientific training. These subjects are important to me because they integrate clinical reasoning with a deep understanding of the biological mechanisms of the nervous system, allowing me to evaluate, diagnose, and understand neurological diseases in a rigorous and humane manner.

Neuro-semiology provided me with practical tools to identify neurological signs and symptoms through clinical examination, even in resource-limited settings. I learned to value medical history, detailed physical examination, and anatomical localization of lesions, which reinforces timely medical decision-making. Neuroscience, for its part, allowed me to understand the cellular and molecular basis of brain function, including neuronal plasticity, neurotransmission, and responses to damage, which is essential knowledge for understanding neurological pathologies and designing prevention and treatment strategies.

In an island territory with limited access to specialists, the ability to perform a complete and accurate neurological examination can make all the difference in the early detection of strokes, epilepsy, nervous system infections, or neurodevelopmental disorders. In addition, knowledge of neuroscience allows for the development of health education strategies aimed at prevention.

In addition, knowledge of neuroscience allows for the development of health education strategies aimed at prevention, for example, regarding vascular risk factors, alcohol consumption, or head trauma.

Finally, these classes allow me to contribute to the strengthening of more equitable, culturally sensitive, and evidence-based health care, helping to improve the quality of life and access to dignified neurological care for my people.”
