Rapa Nui entering the Wine World!!

Located five hours west by plane from Santiago, Easter Island has been Chilean territory since 1888. In 1995, UNESCO named Easter Island a World Heritage Site, with much of the island protected within Rapa Nui National Park. Recent genetic studies have discovered no less than six distinct grape varieties planted during the 19th century and still growing wild on this subtropical island. This year Easter Island received Denominación de Origen (DO) designation as part of a major reform of Chilean wine, and wine makers from the mainland are planting new vines, including Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on the islands.
