"If I had to choose two courses that I studied during 2025, I would select “Living Agents of Disease II” first. This course focuses on the study of pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites, with particular emphasis on the infections most prevalent in the Chilean population. For me, it was an especially enriching experience, as it promoted more hands-on learning through practical activities, where we were able to directly observe different parasites. This approach facilitated a deeper understanding of recurrent infectious agents. I consider this knowledge to be particularly relevant in contexts such as the health care setting of Rapa Nui, where geographic isolation and limited access to high-complexity medical centers make early recognition, prevention, and appropriate management of common infectious diseases essential.
On the other hand, my favorite course from last year was “Internal Medicine II,” a clinical course that integrates both practice and theory. In the practical component, I conducted regular visits with real patients at Hospital San Borja Arriarán, where I interviewed them, identified their symptoms, and discussed each case with a designated tutor. In parallel, on the theoretical side, we studied various diseases that affect the general population. This course was particularly meaningful to me, as it provided a concrete introduction to real clinical practice, strengthening my clinical, communication, and diagnostic reasoning skills. These competencies are essential for the health care reality of Easter Island, where physicians must adopt a comprehensive approach to patient care and be capable of managing a wide range of conditions with limited resources, thereby contributing to more effective and context-appropriate health care delivery."
